A New Year to take a New Challenge

Dear Karen,

I hope I find you well and many wishes to you and your family for a new year. I have finally returned from my mini break in Colorado and getting back to work has been challenging. The feeling of overwhelmed panic is setting in as I delve into the necessary follow-up needed on my patiently waiting emails. The only thing on my mind as I write this and trudge through the masses of electronic messaging are the several dozen other items I have agreed to do before the close of January.

In the coming weeks I will finalize my Teach for America application and submit it, hold a coat drive for local homeless shelters, meet with Bridget, my mentee and ponder my next steps as a person in a dynamic world….oh, there is so much I have dedicated for myself.

Deadlines aside, seriously, the climate is changing rapidly and questions of safety and security are raging on the news front, while here in nonprofit land, we urge on. I am saddened by the acts against others which occur every day in every country around the world. But, I feel a even deeper disturbance by the lack of agency we possess. And I feel it incumbent to set the record strait… Whether it be fear, ignorance, or indifference, the gift of having a voice is the ability to use it. One person cannot change the entire world, but can change the circumstances of a world in change.

Now that I review my writing and think about my upcoming deadlines, I’m beginning to feel better now. Better because this isn’t about me, and I’m thankful for that. The writing today is a bit disjointed and discombobulated, but I will write more soon, and hopefully be a little bit more sound in my transfer of information.

Best to you this January 14th of another decade,

Martiel.
